Internet Explorer 8 using Restart APIs to full potential
Thu, March 19, 2009, 11:49 AM under
Windows
I have been playing with internal bits of Internet Explorer 8 for a while and it is pretty cool. Today the final version has shipped and you can
download IE8 from the Microsoft site
. To see the many cool enhancements I'd encourage you to watch the short videos (or at least just the Overview) on the
dedicated IE8 videos page
.
One of the things I like doing to new apps is crashing them. When a windows app crashes, I fully expect it to restart
and restore the state it had before it died
.
I ranted in detail on that front in an older post of mine
2 years ago.
Internet Explorer 8 finally delivers on my request. This is what I see after I crash it and it restarts:
Love it!

I'd love it a whole lot more if I didn't see that dialog 10 times a day

Priceless, absolutely priceless.
In just three paragraphs you have precisely summed up everything that is wrong with Microsoft.
How can it be the final version if its that easy to crash?
Why not fix the bloody bug rather than blogging about it?

Dave, if you are seeing it that often (with the RTM version) then you should check your addins to see which one is the culprit and, irrespective of that, report it to the IE team.
Martin, you are confusing me with someone that works on the IE team (when you say I should fix the bug). You may also be confusing this blog with an official Microsoft channel: it isn't. This is just a developer's blog that talks about techy stuff that interest me personally, and they happen to be on the Microsoft platform mostly. Thanks for reading though, assuming you are a developer, hopefully the post made you aware of the Vista restart APIs and you can consider using them in your next desktop app (unless your shipping software is totally bug-free in which case hats off)…

Daniel,
Forgive my misunderstanding. Yes, I did think this was a MS blog.
God, I was in a bad mood when I wrote that post. VS2008 crashing all day and arguments and frustration because a team member doesn't think fixing bugs and testing properly is 'that important'.
Just felt like I'm the only one in IT that cares that day...

Martin: No worries, I work for MS, but this is my personal blog. As it happens, I have a friend in IE who you can bring your gripes to about that product ;-)
